Welcome to The Silk Road Cafe

The Silk Road Café is often considered one of Dublin’s best hidden treasures. It’s located in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin Castle with a view over the Castle garden and next to the Coach House. In 2000 The Silk Road Café took over the café premise in the museum.

Proprietor and Chef Abraham Phelan decided to base the cuisine on some of the countries represented in the museum. Middle Eastern, North African, Mediterranean and vegetarian dishes are created by Abraham and his team of Arabic chefs. The focus in each dish is home cooking using only the freshest ingredients and following halal rules.

You will find the café on the ground floor, when entering the Museum, in the Atrium and in the old part of the building. The Atrium is bright and airy with skylights letting as much light into the building as possible. The front and back room of the café has high ceilings and old-style large windows allowing the space to feel larger than it is. In the front room you will find the counter where staff will explain and serve all the homemade food, cake and beverages from.

Our Food

The Silk Road Café  food is based on the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine and reflects some of the countries represented in the museum. Middle Eastern, North African, Mediterranean, vegetarian and celiac friendly dishes are created by our chefs. The focus in each dish is home cooking using only the freshest ingredients and following halal rules. You will find a selection of 12 dishes that change daily all serve with rice and vegetables or with 2 of our 12 vegetarian salads. We also do soups, Panini and freshly made falafels each day. All our cakes, biscuits and breads are homemade and you will find mixed berry scones should to should with chocolate brownies, fruit tarts, fig cake and baklava.

Celiac

Over the last few years, we in The Silk Road Café have noticed an increase in customers asking about celiac  friendly food. According to the Coeliac Society of Ireland “Coeliac disease affects 1 in 100 people in Ireland” and that does not take into consideration the amount of people who benefits from a gluten free diet.  With this in mind we took the decision that we needed to change our way of cooking and baking and have by now changed our recipes, so we can now provide celiac friendly food and cakes. Please ask our staff and they will guide you through what food is celiac friendly and what is not.
